our little piece of Sunshine

I'm moving to Sunshine! (Isn't that a nice thing to say?) and it's true, the suburb of Sunshine in Melbourne's West is going to be our new home. This blog will be on hold until mid-December - hopefully the broadband will be connected by then! So until that time, happy creating everyone!

Cheers l-k.

Tagged! I'm weird.

I've been tagged by the lovely Alicia to post 5 weird things about me. ok, on your marks...

1. I've just found out that one of my teeth has almost no root. The dentist was amazed and said "do you mind if I ask my colleague? I've never seen a case like this!" - it's not like it's wiggling or anything, it's as solid as a rock. bizarre!

2. I cannot eat a grilled cheese sandwich without cutting it into triangles. something from my childhood I guess, it just tastes better that way!

3. I never learned to whistle, and it annoys me so much. I can remember consciously learning to snap (and I'm a damn good snapper!) so I guess that must have eclipsed whistling class?

4. When I get home with the groceries, I love putting them all out together on the counter before I put them away in the cupboard or fridge. Don't know why, it's one of those satisfying popping-the-bubble-wrap feelings.

5. I am the avocado whisperer. I can pick the most perfect ripe-but-not-too-ripe avocado every time - just the right amount of squishyness. What can i say, some people are just born with special talents ;-)

I'm not going to continue the meme at this point because, well, I've been packing boxes all week and I'm just too damn exhausted! We move on Friday to our new house and I'm just so looking forward to having this entire house-looking-buying-moving process over with. I'm really excited, and a tad sad too, but the sadness is mostly dissipating and leaving the elation in its place. I realised when I finished my last job this weekend that I won't be doing any more art in this space. But a new space is ready for me to fill and make my own, and for that, I CAN'T WAIT!

News and more news

This has been an amazing year - when I think of everything that's happened - a 4 month round-the-world trip, buying our first house, and now...

My very talented musician husband won a blues competition with a very talented singer friend of his - and the prize is that they get flown to Memphis at the end of Jan for another competition there! so of course I have to go too. AND, it just so happens that the WEEKEND AFTER his competition is THIS:

so I can't be that close at exactly the right time and not go can I? No, I can't. So I'm going! I registered today. Even though I don't have my plane tickets yet, I AM GOING TO NEW YORK! (in February. BRrrrRR!!) and if you're going, let me know... because I will know no one. (eek!)

So that is very exciting. and moving into our new house in 2 weeks is very exciting also. But I must admit I've surprised myself with how emotional I've been so far, packing up and leaving our rental for the last 5 years. Usually, I love change. (It is as good as a holiday, after all) But I am really sad to leave our little house, with it's gorgeous courtyard, situated 1 block from Sydney Road which offers anything you could ever need - delis, cafes, beer gardens, book shops, art supply stores... everything really. I'll miss it. I'll miss waving to Todd at La Paloma as I pass by, who makes the best sandwiches and coffee ever. I'll miss hearing our deaf Greek neighbours argue through the walls (when they're probably just talking about what to have for dinner). I'll miss walking around the corner to one of the best pubs in Melbourne.

Don't get me wrong, I'm terribly excited about our new house - making it ours, not having to hide the cat for house inspections, painting, decorating, creating a garden.... I'm so excited to be able to express ourselves into the place that we live in. But I have been sighing a lot while I've started the big pack up today.

Life is so bittersweet isn't it?

new blogsters

I've added two wonderful illustrators to my blog list - both happen to be from South America! (my blog needed a bit more latin spice anyway)

go check out
Alicia Padron (sorry Alicia I don't have the "o with accent" character for your last name!)
beautiful soft watercolours with such warm colours and characters - even when playing in the snow!

and Valeria at La Casuni with her cute little funky illos. i love them!

I-F: Scale

this bird is definitely not to scale.

okay, a bit of a stretch for this week's I-F theme, but I couldn't think of anything really good. This image popped into my head some time ago and I've been wanting to paint it ever since. I am also submitting this to Art&Design online's 3rd online exhibition. (you can see last year's here)

Still having lots of fun experimenting with acrylics and collage. it's really interesting how a medium can change your expression of an image!
Cheers

I-F: Hat + 2nd bloggy birthday!

Happy birthday to you,
happy birthday to you,
you look like a bloggy
and you act like one too!
(how weird - "Happy Birthday" by Stevie Wonder started playing on my shuffled music just as I started typing this)

well, exactly 2 years ago today I started my lil kim blog, and a new chapter in my artistic life. so where am I 2 years down? well, a few educational books published which is great, lots of work i can look back on and be proud of (but still see where I can improve!), lots of friends and acquaintances made across the world, now a committee member on Illustrators Australia.... so yes, lots of things have happened, but they all started here!

So thank you to each and every one of you who has ever visited or left a comment. You have all been so lovely and encouraging and such a great community and it really has been a pleasure to be part of it all

and well I have to say it's been an amazing few weeks! Not so much illustration-wise but some other great things have been happening... namely... we bought a house! I am so terribly excited and house proud. it's the cutest little thing, and though it is twice as far out than where we are at the moment, and not nearly as funky a part of town, I can't wait to move there and settle in and know that if we want to we can be there FOREVER. And it's got so much potential (read: studio!!)

so I've been on cloud 11 lately. and also because of another little piece of news. but I'll save that one for another time. oooh, yes I'm a tease aren't I?

love to you all!
xx lil-kim.

the 9x5 swap

I was so happy when I found out that the piece i submitted for the 9x5 exhibition sold, and so I used the money to buy this piece by Christina Miesen, I love it:

I love the bright colours and the little details - the fox's teeth or the little dashes around the sun. it has a bit of it a mexican aesthetic somehow.

hooray for the art swap!
