an email I got from a publisher today reads:
"Hi Kim, Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you. Just letting you know your roughs are approved; no corrections. They’re really sweet. Looking forward to final art."
aaaaahhhhhh. it doesn't happen often to me, so it's realllly good when it does. :-)

seahorsin around
a very quick birthday card for my mother-in-law. Not sure why but this is my second water-themed birthday card in a row. Maybe because it's just so silly to have confetti underwater. (Click here to see party fish.) Maybe someday I'll do these up properly and start a line of aquatic birthday cards! you never know!
... a few more weeks of hard slog and then I'll be in the clear, and hopefully back to I-Fs again. looking forward to it....

I-F: Thanksgiving
I did one!!!
OK, so it's super duper quick but I've been missing I-F, so a slow afternoon at work led me to this. I couldn't stop thinking of the dumb joke we used to tell as kids... one person starts off "1-Q", the next person "2-Q" and when you get to "10-Q" the other responds "you're welcome!" waa ha ha ha! hmm. (almost as good as "i 1 the sandbox... i 8 the sandbox... You ate the sandbox??")
Anyway, Thanksgiving isn't done here in Australia but I used to celebrate it when I lived in Canada/US, although our family always celebrated the Canadian holiday even when we lived in the US. The Canadian thanksgiving is basically the same thing, except because the tradition comes from farmers giving thanks for a good harvest and Canada is much colder, the harvest comes earlier, so it is celebrated some time in October. This meant I always had a non-family Thanksgiving celebration when I lived in the US which was a lot of fun. I'd usually rent a house on the coast with some friends (I lived in Portland, OR) for the long weekend and eat and drink and be very merry. ah.... good times....
I think it's also a good time to remember the people that don't have any turkey at all. No, not the vegetarians! But maybe have a bit less cranberry sauce this year and donate some to your local homeless shelter. A's family has a tradition of donating to a charity instead of giving presents at Christmas, which I have adopted wholeheartedly. Sorry didn't mean to get on my soapbox there. stepping onto firm ground now. Enjoy the feast all my american friends!

One down, three to go...
Well I've completed one of my four jobs that need to be finished by the end of the year. This one was a doozy. 60 illos for a grammar book, mostly of little kids doing different things. It was fantastic practice and really helped me solidify the way I like to draw characters (despite the fact that the publisher requested changes on the way I draw characters. well why did you ask me to do it then?) Anyway, it was great, it's done and now i can move on. I can't wait to post some pictures here. but i guess i need to wait until it's published? is that the etiquette? because someone might steal my low resolution image of a woman holding a potato (not kidding) and pass it off as their own and makes lots of money and I'll be ruined because no one will ever work with me again? ah well. can't take a chance these days I guess. yes i will wait.
I'm really happy with how my illustration career has gone this year though - ever since i dropped down from 4 days to 3 days at my "job," I've had a steady stream of illustration work, and that was July, and I'm already booked through to end of Jan! so I'm loving it. Hopefully soon I can start to pick and choose my projects a bit more.
The next job I have to do should be the most fun. it's a real live children's book (not a hard-cover trade book, but a children's book nonetheless) so I'm super excited!
and even though I haven't been doing I-F, I have still been lurking on some blogs, getting inspired as always. so a hearty 'good on ya' bloggy people!

1 year of bloggy goodness!
I would just like to make a post to acknowledge my blog's first birthday. I was hoping it would coincide with my 100th post but alas I have been a bit busy lately and am only up to #92!
Anyway, I just thought I would do a little retrospective a la end-of-season sit com. put on some suitably cheesy music to accompany. Phil Collins would work well.
I was looking over the last year of my blog and quite amazed by how my art style has changed. I started out totally digital, and trying to figure out how to draw my characters, something a bit like my first Illustration Friday contribution, Night:

I then attempted watercolours ::shudder:: I can hardly look at this next one (Small for I-F)
what is that? What is happening to her hair? and her mouth? my. what control you have with the medium.so... I took some classes. One in watercolours (much needed), one in children's book creation which I blogged about (first post here) - and then I started to make a bit of progress. I think below was my first 'breakthrough' piece (Jungle for I-F)

then I started to do things I actually liked on more of a regular basis... like

All for I-F of course. I-F came exactly at the right time for me. I needed to experiment a lot and 'find my style'. I needed some sort of motivation to create, because despite the fact that I love it when I do it, that in itself is not always enough to make me sit down and be dedicated. But one little word each week... just one word was enough for me, and it gave me the forum to experiment in and so I'm happy and grateful for that. And happy and grateful for the bloggy friends I've made as well. This whole virtual community that I feel quite connected to now and always know I can go to for inspiration (like at three thumbs up) or help (like my online critique group at the creative cup) and there's so much more to discover if only I didn't need any sleep! But I'm very proud of my blog because I feel like it's helped me make great leaps this year. At the beginning of the year I was considering going back to school. Basically I didn't know what to do with myself. now I have cultivated a style (ever-evolving as it is) and already gotten work with it. It's been a very exciting year. so happy birthday blog!
I'd like to celebrate my adding a few more names to my blog roll.
please visit these lovely people:
Jules Knoblock - fun, quirky crazy illos
Jenn Morris - different styles including cool scratchboard-looking illos
Rottentuna - very funky and distinctive
Jared Chapman - fun and funky characters
I've also added Drawn! which I check all the time for good times and inspiration, Illustrators Australia which I've just joined (website update apparently coming soon) and also the Aussie Illustration forums which i check very often too (maintained by the ever-busy Jules!)
I hope to get back to doing some Illustration Fridays soon. Until then, happy surfing and illustrating! (not necessarily in that order) xx
