Travelling home.
It was such a great time....
Getting inspired, and meeting new and old friends at the SCBWI conference in Seattle (see previous post)....
Dancing all day and all night in New Orleans....
Catching up with family including two little nieces....
And to top it off a positive meeting with a publisher in Boston....
And I've returned to some fun news too:
My illustration is one of the chosen ones for They Draw and Cook's Cookbook, out now! (buy it here)
I will also be featured in 100 illustrations next illustration Annual
I will be starting work immediately on 2 books for Five Mile Press.
It's always nice to have some good news and something to dive into to help dispel the post-vacation blues!

Back in the Pacific Northwest
As usual, the SCBWI Conference I attended just outside of Seattle was fun, entertaining, informative and inspiring.
I was lucky enough to get into the awesome illustrator's masterclass with the formidable Dan Santat and Anne Moore from Candlewick Press. Dan was first up and took us through some basics of colour theory and composition which is always good to review. But THEN he took a portfolio piece from each one of us (submitted earlier) and photoshopped them to make them stronger, using those principles. It was EXCELLENT.
We also had some homework for Anne and she took us through each piece speaking from the publisher's point of view, which was very insightful. It was so interesting to see how everyone had interpreted the same text (like with illustration Friday).
Then it was 2 days of inspiring and informative talks. I was also given a (very lovely) gift bag for being the person who had travelled the furthest to get there - true, there weren't any other people from Australia!
I think the best sessions i attended were:
Victoria Jamieson on creating book dummies, where she took as through the multiple versions of her story in dummy form, from beginning to publication (including agent/publisher notes along the way)
Rollin Thomas on story book structures and myths
Anne Moore on book and type design, which is something I've always been interested in.
The other wonderful part of these conferences of course, is meeting wonderful people. I finally got to meet Stacia who is the diva of Creative Cup, our online critique group. It was so lovely to hang out with her all weekend!
I also met Shane Watson who is a fantastic illustrator with sci-fi bent, and also all-around great person. Go check out his work!
And luckily I also got to see Richard Jesse Watson, the amazing illustrator who critiqued my portfolio at last year's LA SCBWI conference. It was a treat to catch up with him and also meet his family including his son illustrator Jesse Joshua Watson. At one point I found myself sitting at a table with Richard, Jesse, Dan Santat and David Hohn, wondering what alternate reality I had stepped into?
I have left with so many ideas swirling in my head, and a definite direction to go in both my writing and illustration.
Even though I'm on holidays, you can't stop these things working in the background.
But, next stop New Orleans. A city of music, food, culture... And not a moment to waste!

I-F: Toy + IA for JP auction LIVE
I am soon heading to the bustling metropolis of Redmond, WA, USA for the regional Western Washington SCBWI conference. woo! I was quick off the mark this time and managed to sign up for the Illustrator Masterclass which promises to be VERY cool. We were asked to illustrate some supplied text as "homework". The text I chose was:
"I love socks," said Blink.
"Some socks are more lovable than others," said Gollie.

This morning.... I registered for the SCBWI summer conference in LA in July. (eee!)

I-F: Tales and Legends
I'm sure there are many tales told about the Great Wall of China.
This is an old one (hence the different style) - it was for a book about the Olympics in Beijing THIS YEAR. (2008 seemed so far away when I did it!)
Well this will be my last post before I head off to the USA to Memphis to see my hubby perform and then to NY for the SCBWI conference. I'm pretty happy with my folio, though i think i'll use the plane rides to do a few finishing touches! (i've got a few of em! plane rides that is.)
One of the things I'm most excited about the conference is meeting fellow illustrators Alicia, Monica and Courtney. See you there ladies!
So off I go... I plan to keep a visual diary in my moleskine so I'll be sure to do a big write-up/sketch-up on it when I get back.
Until then, have fun out there in bloggy land!

I-F: Plain
It's plain to see that love is in the air!
This is going to be a wedding present for a friend of mine.
I'm really enjoying the combination of acrylics and collage. This has collaged bits of an old book and also Japanese washi paper. I'm pretty happy with it - I just hope the newlyweds are too!
I've started doing little colour sketches for my paintings in my moleskine before i do the real thing - it helps me think about how i want to use colour in the piece and i find it really helpful... thought you might like to see..
This piece is also going to be the last addition for my folio for the NY SCWBI conference. (I leave in exactly a week! and still so much to do!)

I-F: Little things
I've been trying to get into the head of a teenager lately, and this is what I came up with. I was given the opportunity to do an illustration for an anthology for 10-14 year-olds, with a completely open subject matter - so I used I-F's prompt to help me along. I started thinking about the little things I used to enjoy when I was a teenager, and one of them was just lying on my bed listening to music, which I never seem to do anymore (funnily though, this idea solidified when I was sitting listening to music!)
Maybe because technology is such a big part of our lives now, I find I don't do the 'little things' as much anymore. Since I have just moved and am still completely surrounded by boxes, (it was hard work finding my paints and clearing a space to work!) the stereo/television etc. aren't connected, internet only just connected, I have found myself reverting to simpler things - and it's good. We should switch off the computers more often! (she says in front of her Mac)
Anyway, I hope you like this. This one is a triple-whammy! My submission for I-F, and also for this anthology, and ALSO for my folio for when I go to the conference in New York in Feb - I'm going to work really hard at all the I-F topics until I go, to make them all portfolio-worthy pieces. (I hope!)
Oh, and I must say - homeownership is divine! We've already ripped out some cupboards, and just being able to dream about knocking down walls, painting murals, planting trees... it's all so tasty! We haven't started making repayments yet though!! :-)

News and more news
This has been an amazing year - when I think of everything that's happened - a 4 month round-the-world trip, buying our first house, and now...
My very talented musician husband won a blues competition with a very talented singer friend of his - and the prize is that they get flown to Memphis at the end of Jan for another competition there! so of course I have to go too. AND, it just so happens that the WEEKEND AFTER his competition is THIS:
so I can't be that close at exactly the right time and not go can I? No, I can't. So I'm going! I registered today. Even though I don't have my plane tickets yet, I AM GOING TO NEW YORK! (in February. BRrrrRR!!) and if you're going, let me know... because I will know no one. (eek!)
So that is very exciting. and moving into our new house in 2 weeks is very exciting also. But I must admit I've surprised myself with how emotional I've been so far, packing up and leaving our rental for the last 5 years. Usually, I love change. (It is as good as a holiday, after all) But I am really sad to leave our little house, with it's gorgeous courtyard, situated 1 block from Sydney Road which offers anything you could ever need - delis, cafes, beer gardens, book shops, art supply stores... everything really. I'll miss it. I'll miss waving to Todd at La Paloma as I pass by, who makes the best sandwiches and coffee ever. I'll miss hearing our deaf Greek neighbours argue through the walls (when they're probably just talking about what to have for dinner). I'll miss walking around the corner to one of the best pubs in Melbourne.
Don't get me wrong, I'm terribly excited about our new house - making it ours, not having to hide the cat for house inspections, painting, decorating, creating a garden.... I'm so excited to be able to express ourselves into the place that we live in. But I have been sighing a lot while I've started the big pack up today.
Life is so bittersweet isn't it?
